The incident unfolded yesterday afternoon on the outskirts of Newry, where a coach operated by Quinn Coaches, carrying over 40 pupils from St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook, crashed and overturned on Tullyah Road. Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly before 3:45 PM, with crews remaining on-site for several hours. Quinn Coaches announced the driver’s passing on Tuesday night, expressing deep sorrow. They stated, ‘We are devastated to confirm that one of our drivers was involved in a road traffic accident while transporting schoolchildren today. Despite immediate emergency response, our beloved colleague passed away. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this unimaginable time. He was a valued and seasoned member of our team, and his absence will be deeply felt.’
The company also emphasized their relief that no children were seriously injured, reiterating their commitment to safety. ‘We are fully cooperating with authorities and kindly ask that the privacy of the driver’s family and the school community be respected,’ they added. The driver’s name has not yet been released, and his passing is being treated as a sudden death.
Neighbors who witnessed the aftermath described a harrowing scene, with children climbing out of the bus through windows and the roof.
