Over 400 positions in preschool and classified roles are at risk of being eliminated in the Sacramento City Unified School District. The district's board of education approved these cuts due to a staggering $113 million deficit. This financial crisis has sparked frustration among families and employees, with some even calling for state intervention. However, district officials remain optimistic that the district won't face insolvency this year. Initially, the deficit was projected at $51.6 million, but it has since ballooned. The district claims it has found ways to save $44 million, including laying off 68 administrative positions, cutting non-school department budgets, and freezing non-essential supply purchases. The board met to approve two resolutions: one for classified employees and one for preschool employees, citing 'lack of work and/or lack of funds' as the primary reasons. These layoffs will be effective at the end of the current school year. A district spokesperson attributed the dire situation to poor budgeting practices and inaccurate financial representations. As of now, 121 positions are vacant, and 45 more are under review. The district will provide further updates on its financial plan on February 18th.
