Resident Evil Requiem: Sony's Upgraded PSSR Upscaler on PS5 Pro
Sony has announced that Resident Evil Requiem is the first game to utilize its enhanced PSSR upscaler on the PlayStation 5 Pro. This technology, which stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is set to revolutionize gaming visuals. Mark Cerny, Lead Architect for PS5 and PS5 Pro, revealed that the upgraded PSSR is rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks, marking a significant leap in visual fidelity.
The PSSR is an AI library that analyzes and upscales game images pixel by pixel, enhancing the resolution of over 50 titles on PS5 Pro so far. Cerny explained that the new version of PSSR takes a different approach to both the neural network and the overall algorithm, resulting in improved frame rates and image quality.
Capcom's Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager of Engine Development, highlighted the game's focus on enhancing the protagonist's presentation quality through an upgraded RE Engine. This attention to detail, such as rendering individual strands of hair and beard as polygons, adds a new level of realism and immersion. Ijuin emphasized the importance of these intricate details in creating an unparalleled horror experience.
To demonstrate the upgrade, Sony provided a side-by-side comparison of a screenshot from Resident Evil Requiem using the original and new PSSR upscaling. The new PSSR clearly showcased more defined hair strands, showcasing the technology's ability to enhance visual details.
Cerny attributed the new PSSR's algorithm and neural network to Sony's partnership with AMD on Project Amethyst. He noted that PC gamers have already benefited from this collaboration through AMD's FSR 4 upscaling technology. The updated PSSR is a refined version of this co-developed technology, offering further improvements for PS5 Pro players.
Sony confirmed that multiple existing games will be upgraded to the improved PSSR in March, with no initial details on which titles will be included. The system software update will enable players to experience the new PSSR with compatible PS5 Pro games. Cerny suggested that players can expect noticeably crisper graphics in some games after the update.
Resident Evil Requiem has already made a significant impact, becoming Steam's biggest launch for a Resident Evil title. IGN's review praised the game's unique blend of survival horror, awarding it a 9/10. The game's intricate in-game mystery, known as the Final Puzzle, has captivated players, offering a level of complexity unseen in the franchise.
