Pat Lam Supports Exeter Chiefs' Plan to Avoid Prem Cup Blank Weekends
Pat Lam, the Bristol Bears boss, has endorsed a proposal by Exeter Chiefs' manager Rob Baxter to introduce a finals day in the PREM Cup. This idea aims to prevent clubs from facing potential gaps of two or three weekends without a match. The Chiefs narrowly avoided this fate by defeating Bath in their final group game last weekend, securing their place in the semi-finals.
Baxter's concept involves the ten teams competing for final rankings. Lam agrees with this approach, suggesting that a single day at a neutral stadium or home grounds could be organized for the matches. This format is reminiscent of the under-18s matches Lam witnessed at Kingsholm.
Lam expressed his preference for removing the PREM Cup from the pre-season schedule, citing concerns about player fatigue. He explained that during pre-season, teams often field large squads of 30-32 players, allowing for substitutions in case of minor injuries. However, when reduced to 23 players, players are forced to play the full 80 minutes, which can be detrimental to their well-being.
Additionally, Lam advocated for the relocation of the Under-18 and Under-20 Six Nations to avoid clashes with the PREM Cup. This would enable clubs to showcase their top young talents in the first team. Lam highlighted that many players in these age groups should be participating in the PREM Cup but are currently engaged in the Six Nations competitions for their respective nations.
Despite his suggestions, Lam remains open to the final decision, emphasizing his willingness to adapt and adjust based on the chosen format.
