Moynat, the renowned French luxury brand, is set to unveil its final collaboration with Kasing Lung, the creator of the beloved Labubu character, on March 6th. This highly anticipated collection marks the culmination of a successful partnership, offering a unique blend of art and fashion. The limited-edition range showcases a fresh selection of artwork by Lung, featuring his iconic 'The Monsters' series, which has captivated audiences worldwide. The artwork is boldly displayed on Moynat's signature M Canvas, adorning a variety of bags and small leather goods.
The collection includes the Hobo purse, Mini 48h bag, Little Suitcase model, and totes in various sizes, all adorned with printed leather patches depicting Labubu, Zimomo, and King Mon characters. The Mignon bag, made to order, showcases a 2024 illustration with charms featuring the characters in different poses. Available in six vibrant colors, the designs will exclusively be sold at Moynat's Paris boutiques and its outpost in Le Bon Marché.
The collectible aspect is further enhanced by the packaging, featuring a shopping bag charm with eyes that can open and close, as revealed by Bertrand Le Gall, director of image and communication at Moynat. The collaboration is supported by a quartet of famous French faces, including Farida Khelfa, Sarah Andelman, Audrey Tautou, and Noémie Lenoir, who strike a pose for Chinese photographer Theo Liu.
Moynat announced its collaboration with Lung last September, with a campaign starring Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung. This marked the first time Lung's artwork appeared on leather goods, and he expressed his disbelief at the opportunity. The first drop with Moynat took place in Shanghai in October, followed by a second drop in January, both supported by star-studded American casts. Lung created 'The Monsters' universe in 2015, with most of the plastic renditions of the characters manufactured by How2work, a Hong Kong-based design production house.
The Labubu character, a 'side character' in the series, has become a global phenomenon, with fans ranging from Marc Jacobs to Blackpink's Lalisa Manobal. The Paris leg of the 'Monsters by Monsters: Now and Then (The Present and the Future)' anniversary exhibition, co-organized by Pop Mart and How2work, showcases a room full of furry dolls perfect for souvenir snaps. It's one of six thematic spaces, spanning the full range of collectible figurines created in the past decade, including unpublished sketches by Lung. The artist is also working on his next picture book with Labubu as the main character, slated for release this year, and is the artistic director of the upcoming ComplexCon Hong Kong edition.
